Elgi Toman, age 80, passed on with loving family by his side at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, unexpectedly on July 28, 2016. He was born Sept. 15, 1935 in Flasher, North Dakota to John and Adel (Slavick) Toman and grew up on the family farm. On Dec. 6, 1958, two days after graduating from North Dakota State University, Elgi married Darleen (Patzer) Toman, the love of his life for over 57 years. Elgi and Darleen’s love story started through correspondence while Elgi was a foreign exchange student during college, and they saw each other for the first time when he returned from England to Jamestown, North Dakota in 1957. Elgi and Darleen lived in Jamestown where Elgi was an insurance agent for National Farmers Union Insurance. In 1967 Elgi and Darleen moved to Baraboo with their three children to continue his insurance career with the company. As a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) Elgi started Badger Insurance Specialists, a general insurance agency, which he owned and operated from 1974 until his retirement. Elgi was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known for his friendly smile and kind heart, and being a loyal and trustworthy friend. Elgi never met a stranger, and he could make anyone laugh. Along with Darleen, he was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church since 1967. He participated in many civic and professional groups. Elgi was a long-time, dedicated Mason, belonging to the Baraboo Masonic Lodge #34 Free and Accepted Masons. He also was a Zor Shriner, as a member of the Vacationland Shrine Club, since 1982. Elgi is survived by his wife, Darleen; their three children and their spouses, Dennis Toman (Lynne) of Greensboro, North Carolina, Brian Toman of Reedsburg, and Kari Jefferson (Jose) of Holmen. He is also survived by five grandchildren and spouses, Austin Toman (Elaina), Kyle Toman (Sami Spedoske), Andrew Toman, Jeremiah and Jonas Jefferson; along with his older brothers and sisters, Adel, Leo, John and Irene; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, Baraboo. Private interment will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 3 p.m. by the Baraboo Masonic Lodge #34 Free and Accepted Masons. In addition, a public Memorial service will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Baraboo, with Pastor Karen Hofstad officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2025 East River Parkway, Minneapolis, MN 55414 or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Baraboo. The Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., Baraboo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
